A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall

I heard this song,  “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” by Bob Dylan in the first time in a long long time today on the radio (thanks to George Williams of “Ready Steady George!!”).  And I was moved by the powerful message of the song.

I am not a poet.  So I don’t know the exact meaning of the song.  But I think I get the general ideas.  And the message is powerful to me.

The song begins like this

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
And where have you been my darling young one?

And the song continues by the “blue-eyed son” describing the places he has been, the things he has seen and heard, people he has met.

And they all reflect the sad reality of the world.

And then he concludes the chorus by singing,

And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.

I assume the song was written sometime in the 1960’s.  But the sad reality of the world has not changed much.

Listening to the song as a teenager back in 1980’s, I used to feel sad about the world that I was about to enter into.  Unfairness, injustice, loneliness, emptiness, hopelessness.  To me, these are the impression of the world that is described in the song.

After hearing about the terrible terrorist attack in Paris, I started thinking more about the violence in the world and why it happens.

Again, I am not sociology researcher.  So I don’t know the exact cause of the violence.  But I have some ideas.  And those, to me, are unfairness, injustice, loneliness, emptiness, hopelessness, what is depicted in the song.

The world now feels like “a hard rain’s a-gonna fall”  A chain of violence.

Experiencing this awful reality of the world, this blue eyed son can become someone who would spend all of his time in front of computer writing negative things of others in the internet and fueling into more violence in the world.  If something went wrong and extreme, he could become a desperate terrorist or school shooter.  He could start the hard rain himself.

I could have become the one.

The last verse starts by asking another question to the “blued eyed son

And what’ll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
And what’ll you do now my darling young one?

And fortunately, the blue-eyed son answers to the question

I’m a-goin’ back out ‘fore the rain starts a-fallin’

And he again starts describing the world he is going back into.  But he makes a strong statement of what he will do there.

And I’ll tell and speak it and think it and breathe it
And reflect from the mountain so all souls can see it
And I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin’
But I’ll know my song well before I start singing

As a person, a father, a teacher, and a music therapist, I feel that I have to be “a-goin’ back out ‘fore the rain starts a-fallin'”.  I feel that I should start from where I am now, to breathe with the young souls and reflect what we can do to make the world a little better place, before they get consumed by the world’s unfairness, injustice, loneliness, emptiness, and hopelessness, which seem to me as one of the cause of violence.
