(You can earn American Ph D in Music Therapy in Japan!)

Did you know that you can earn Ph D in Music Therapy in Japan?

Temple University, prestigious school in American music therapy that created many fine music therapy practitioners, theorists and researchers, has a branch in Tokyo Japan.  And they are launching the Ph D course in Music Therapy at Temple University Japan (as know as TUJ).  Please refere to the link below for the actual information.

http://www.temple.edu/boyer/academicprograms/music-therapy/index.asp#PhDMT

http://www.temple.edu/boyer/academicprograms/music-therapy/index.asp#PhDMT

The Ph D courses consist with intensives and online learning, just as same as what they offer in Philadelphia main campus.  It is arranged in the way that those who have full time position can manage.

I am going to challenge this Ph D program.  I have been accepted to the program before I began my current job and have postponed the admission.

Below is the schedule of the courses offered during intensive, which I acquired from Dr. Dileo, the Coordinator PhD Program in Music Therapy.

(Listening Between the Notes: Aesthetic Chills in Everyday Music Listening by E. C. Nusbaum, et. al)

When assisting a senior student’s final project, we found an interesting article by the search term music listening.

This study investigates the effect of music on people’s “aesthetic chills.” What is unique in this study is that, instead of segregating music as one variable within in the artificial lab, the researchers investigated the musical effect of aesthetic chills in a participants’ daily setting. Other variables they took into consideration were the context(with others or alone) and emotional states(happy, sad, worried), as well as the music (own selection or not), and listening behavior (listening closely or not).

As you might expect, the result showed that it is significantly more likely that people experience the aesthetic chills when they are listening to their own selected music closely in certain emotional states (happy or sad, not worried).

I like this study because the researchers take the context into considerations in investigating the effect of music.

Enjoy reading it further if you like.

パーソナルソングを観た感想 (my reaction to “alive inside”)

I went to see the movie “Alive inside” with my music therapy colleagues the other day.

This movie depicts how listening to the familiar songs from childhood or teenage years through the use of headphones and iPod would revitalize, bring smiles of, and recall memories of the elderly with Alzheimer’s disease.

This movie also has the message that we should bring music to the elderly persons with the Alzheimer’s disease rahter than expensive medicine.  This movie depicts the work and struggles of a social worker, Dan Cohen, to bring music to elderly in nursing homes.  Mr. Cohen founded a non profit organization called “Music & Memory” to continue this effort.

The mission of this organization is to “brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm through digital music technology, vastly improving quality of life.”

This movie depicts the therapeutic power of music, which we as music therapist often witness daily.  However, we must not assume that what they do is music therapy.

Mr. Dan Cohen also acknowledges that what they do is not music therapy.

Yet, it was unfortunate that the term “music therapy” was often used in the Japanese subtitles of the movie.  The Japanese term of “music therapy” was used when the English term was not actually used.

To put it in the easiest term, music therapy is

“the process of improving the health of the individuals in need through the relationship in music.”

Given the premise, this receptive “method” of providing the familiar music from childhood or teenage years of the person through the use of headphones cannot be considered as music therapy.  It is because it lacks the relational factor.

Dan Cohen

Mr. Dan Cohen probably is a guy with a warm heart.  When he approaches the elderly persons in nursing home to have them listen to music, he appeared respectful to them.  Also when the elderly persons respond to the music, he would interact with them naturally.  The elderly people in the film would volunterarily start talking, singing, and dancing.  They obviously looked different.  It looks as though they have become healthier.

Then, did the change occure solely by the method of “listening to familiar music through headphones”?  I don’t think so.  There always was a relational factor involved.  Mr. Cohen’s way of acknowledging their response to the music played the significant role, I think.

His effort, at this point, is to “bring personalized music.”  It is different from music therapy which attempts to “improve the health of the individuals through the relationship in music.” It is not “music” that calms the mind.  It is the “shared musical experience” that calms the mind.

If this method alone is introduced to the nursing homes being considered as “music calms the mind of these people,” that would probably cause many problems.  I can imagine the person with Alzheimer’s disease would be scared of wearing the headphones for not understanding what would happen, and become physically violent, if one would approach with the attitude of “just wear these headphones”

In order to become a music therapist, we must learn to acquire the skills and knowledge in music, disability, communication, various music therapy approaches and their fundamental theories, documentation, ethics and so forth.

People nowadays seem to want some “quick fix.”  Therefore, it would be no surprise that people would call this method depicted in the movie “alive inside” as music therapy for it would provide them a quick fix.  However, it is not music therapy.  In the “process of improving the health of the individuals in need through the relationship in music”, various knowledge and skills, foundamental theory and research findings, and ethical consideration are mandatory.

What has been depcited in the movie is wonderful.  But I hope people would not misunderstand this as “music therapy”.

What’s new in this third edition?

Besides the little things such as a new cool cover image, there are two major changes from the previous editions. One is the addition of new chapter, which contains the analysis of various music therapy definitions by various theorists and organizations from all over the world. Another change is more procedural in composing the newly revised definition.

cover image of DMT

In the process of recreating the new music therapy definition in this edition, Bruscia invited two groups of music therapy scholars, one is called deconstruction party and the other is called reconstruction party.

For the deconstruction parry, Bruscia invited scholars who provided feedback and critique to his definition in the second edition. They are Brian Abrams, Brynjulf Stige, Susan Hadley, Randi Rolvsjord, Dorit Amir, Jane Edwards, Carolyn Kenny, Even Ruud, Rudy Garred, Jennifer Adrienne, Kenneth Aigen, and Henk Smeijsters for deconstruction party.

For the reconstruction party, Bruscia invited scholars who know him and his work very well and understand difficulty of coming up with the balanced music therapy definition. They are Brian Abrams, Denise Grocke, Michael Zanders, James Hiller, Susan Gardstrom, Lillian Eyre, Joy Allen, Joke Bradt, and Michelle Hintz.

By incorporating various music therapy definitions from all over the world, as well as inviting scholars to gather the inputs towards reconstructing the new definition, Bruscia attempted to come up with the definition which capture the wide variety of theory and practice in music therapy in this edition.

In my next blog, I will talk about how Bruscia analyzed the various music therapy definitions from all over the world in the newly added chapter.

Interpreting “Defining music therapy (3rd edition)” #1「

This book “Defining music therapy” by Dr. Kenneth Bruscia has been quite influential in my professional development.

Because this book was not used in my undergraduate music therapy course, I was first exposed to the Japanese translation of this book.

The second edition of this book seemed to me like a map to navigate around the “vast ocean” of the music therapy world.

It especially helped me to conceptualize what it means “to promote client’s health”, with the discussion of pathogenic and salutegenic orientation.

I don’t think I would have been able to be in the teaching position of music therapy without this book. This book is that influential to me.

Now the third edition of “Defining Music Therapy” is out. This is going to be Dr. Bruscia’s final work for this book, according to him.

Because this book is built around the proposed working definition of music therapy, it may be difficult for someone who doesn’t have the previous knowledge in music therapy. It is because this book does not provide specific clinical examples to illustrate his points. Dr. Bruscia also acknowledges the nature of the book.

So I would like to provide interpretations on this book, little by little, in this blog.

I hope it would help those who are studying music therapy, especially in Japan, to comprehend the vast ocean of music therapy.
